Alcohol Dependence and Endogenous Opioids

Abstract
Alcohol affects a lot of neuronal systems in the brain. And there are so many studies on the relationship between alcohol dependence and neuronal systems. Since the effectiveness of natrexone to the preventing relapse on alcohol dependence was
presented, the importance of endogenous opioids in alcohol dependence has been emphasized.
The author reviewed the relationship between alcohol dependence and endogenous opioids in the three aspects : alcohol and endogenous opioid, alcohol drinking behavior and endogenous opioids, and the effect of opioid antagonist to the alcohol
dependence.
The results shows that alcohol reinforces alcohol drinking behavior by increasing the activity of the opioid system in the brain and that naltrexone effectively prevents relapse in alcohol dependence by blocking the alcohol's reinforcement in the
opioid
systems.
